KING FOOTBALL IS BACK
BUCKEYE LOCAL’S Brandon Bartrug -- who ran for more than 100 yards -- plunges through the middle of the Martins Ferry defense as Jared Hanson (51) dives to make the play. Buckeye Local’s Tim Telek (53) and Chris Worwa (77) look on.
That Buckeye Local-Martins Ferry series just never ceases to amaze. Scoring 21 unanswered points in the second half and completely dominating both sides of the ball after the intermission, the Panthers opened the 2008 season in grand fashion Friday with an exciting 21-14 win over the Purple Riders at Memorial Stadium in Yorkville. Coach Ron Pobolish’s Panthers, coming off a three-win season in ‘07, earned their first win over the Riders in five years. The last Buckeye win over Martins Ferry came in 2003 when the Panthers registered an unbeaten regular season and a post-season playoff spot. On the other side of the coin, coach Dave Bruney has been one of the valley’s most successful coaches in recent years making numerous trips to the post-season. Since beginning the series in 1990, the Riders own a 10-6 series record. Both teams are in action next week with Buckeye Local traveling to St. Clairsville and the Riders hosting Edison.
