Working to mend a broken fence
For some Democrats, especially the party's faithful, Friday's joint appearance of their likely nominee Barack Obama and his former rival Hillary Clinton has got to be welcomed news. The campaign left both camps bruised. The healing started when Clinton announced her support of Obama, but Friday’s joint appearance by the two former rivals might give Obama some momentum through the summer. On the other hand, the rift might not be bridged by whom it counts – Clinton's supporters. The primaries were particularly ugly for the Democrats. It exposed some potential weaknesses in the delegate system of nominating candidates. While it could be argued that the splitting of delegates proportionally might be a more open process that brings out more voters, it also has it's drawbacks, like we've witnessed this past cycle. Nobody expected the primaries to run until almost the very end of the process, which did give Republican John McCain a bit of a head start on the race.
