Tunnel Vision
The eastbound lanes of the Wheeling Tunnels were officially closed once again for repairs. The question is this: will there be light at the end of the tunnel this time? Local motorists got used to the major detour last year when the eastbound lanes of the tunnels were closed for several months. The rest of the highway traffic traveling one of the nation’s busiest interstates was able to utilize Interstate 470. For area motorists, we have to get back into that detour frame of mind, choosing between a few key routes: taking downtown Wheeling past the (Native American) statue at McColloch’s Leap to U.S. 40, or perhaps Ohio 7 to I-470. Any way you slice it, your alternate route must be strategically planned, taking in consideration the high-traffic drive times of the day. Drive-time bottlenecks tend to pop up even when both lanes of the tunnels are open. The unforeseen hurdles faced by the project contractor, Velotta Co.
