Drying Up?Debt
STOPPING THE leaks. That is what a $3.50 monthly surcharge is intended to do for the Village of Bellaire.
Council members last week made a tough decision, opting to add that surcharge to customers' water bills. It is a decision we support as well as noting the courage needed to make it.
If it plays out as expected, the new influx of money will remedy a major problem: a projected $100,000 deficit in the All-American Town's water fund.
That is a crisis that needs immediate and decisive action. Council members did just that.
We believe the $3.50 surcharge is the shot-in-the-arm needed to erase that problem.
The money realized from the new charge is targeted for water plant use only.
The surcharge will obviously not be welcomed with open arms by the community's water customers.
No one likes to face added expenses.
