Shadyside-Monroe facing early must-win situation?
SHADYSIDE’S RECEIVING duo of Dylan Kimble (15) and Nathan Butts (16) leave the field during last Friday’s game against Ridgewood. The Tigers will seek their initial win of the season this Friday at home when rival Monroe Central comes calling.
Shadyside and Monroe Central have developed into one of the area’s better small-school rivalries over the course of time. However, the 2008 meeting, which will unfold Friday at Fleming Field in Shadyside, takes on an even greater meaning than normal for the simple fact that neither the Tigers nor the Seminoles are wanting to start the season at 0-2. Both squads were tough-luck losers during week one on their home turf. Shadyside watched a 35-yard field goal sail through uprights as time expired to fall to Ridgewood, 31-28. Monroe Central, meanwhile, was on the short end of a 20-19 score against Columbiana Crestview. “We have to learn from what happened Friday and get ready to go again this week,” Shadyside head coach Ty Fleming said. “We’ve got to eliminate the first-game mistakes and play solid on both sides of the ball because we know how good Monroe Central is.
