St. Clairsville Our Town

City schools rich in history

MUSIC and the arts continue to gain credibility in the St. Clairsville-Richland City School District as students numbers increase in these programs. Shown are students promoting a jazz concert earlier this year.

A log cabin built in 1802 housed the first classroom in St. Clairsville. In 1868, a large, three-story building was constructed to house an elementary school on the first floor, the high school on the second floor, and meeting rooms for the Masonic Temple on the third floor. It was located on Main Street at the site of the current Masonic Building.
Three years later, St. Clairsville High School had its first graduate: Maggie Davies, the only member of the class of 1871.
In the following years, the graduating classes grew slowly until 1913, when there were 16 graduates. At that point, the citizens decided to build a new school. Completed in 1918, the new school featured a flag on its roof, which could be seen from most areas of town. The building now houses the fifth and sixth grades of the middle school.
The first high school yearbook was published in about 1916 and named it the Schi-Schan.
